Character:
Jack Bauer
Summary: Jack is hiding under an assumed name
when he is contacted by Chloe, who believes that the attacks on Palmer,
Tony and Michelle are related to him. Jack meets Chloe at an abandoned
oil refinery, but he was followed by Derek, the teenage son of Jack’s
girlfriend Diane. Jack traps the assassin, who confesses that he was
hired to take out Palmer. Jack kills the man in fury.
With Chloe’s help, Jack enters the crime scene where Palmer was
assassinated. He and Wayne Palmer find a name and address in an
encrypted file on the computer. Chloe traces it to a baggage handler at
the Ontario Airport. When CTU finds out that Jack is in the building, he
slips out with Derek and goes to that airport. Jack hands off Derek to
Diane there. The baggage handler takes a poison pill before Jack can
obtain any information. While he is there, the terrorists hijack the
terminal and tell the hostages that they have demands for the President.
Jack hides in the airport, feeding information to CTU. He promises Diane
that he will get Derek out. Yet when Derek is about to be killed, Jack
has Chloe help him detonate an explosive on one of the men. This
distracts Beresch, the leader, and Derek is saved. Jack confesses to
Buchanan that he was responsible for the bomb. Beresch learns that Jack
is spying on him from inside and he cuts off Jack’s cell signal.
Beresch threatens to kill Derek because the boy has a connection to
Jack. Jack is forced to surrender to save him.
When the President does not cancel the summit Beresch makes the captured
Jack call CTU to convince them to attack from an entry where the
terrorists will trap them. Jack phones his ex-employer but relays a
secret duress signal as a warning. He sees Beresch pass a keycard to one
of the hostages. CTU is able to capture the terrorists, but Beresch
kills himself before Jack can grab him. After the melee, the hostage
with the keycard who had been working with the terrorists goes missing.
Before Jack can find the man, Curtis has orders to take Jack into
custody. Jack hugs Derek and sends him and Diane to CTU.
Jack is brought to CTU where he sees Audrey for the first time. McGill
absolves Jack of Palmer’s murder and grants him a low-level security
clearance to help with the investigation. He agrees with Jack’s theory
that Palmer was killed because he knew about the terrorist plot. When
Jack is lured to Tony's bedside, a hit man attacks him but Jack kills
the man. Jack gets Spenser to admit that Cummings from the White House
hired him to monitor CTU. While CTU can’t go after the Chief of Staff,
Jack says that he can do it because he doesn’t work for CTU.
Jack says goodbye to Diane and Derek, telling her that he is still in
love with Audrey. With McGill’s approval, Jack goes to a clandestine
meeting with Novick but he is arrested by the Secret Service when he
arrives. Jack appeals to Agent Pierce, who worked detail on Palmer, for
help exposing Cummings for treason. Pierce confirms that the First Lady
had the same reservations, and he brings Jack to see the President. Jack
makes his accusations against Cummings and threatens to torture him
unless Cummings tells him where the nerve gas is. Cummings gives up the
information, and Jack has CTU find the container. CTU agents raid the
boat, but the nerve gas is gone. The yellow tie man found out that
Cummings had been deceiving him. To appease Logan’s political
concerns, Jack offers to disappear once the terrorist threat is over.
After the President reinstates him, Jack choppers to the location where
a man has contacted Erwich about detonating the nerve gas canisters.
With Curtis’ help, Jack raids the building and captures the man. The
man demands immunity and to be given the fifteen year-old Russian girl
whom he has held captive. Jack is forced to grant him his wishes,
including the young girl. The man is contacted by Erwich, who will meet
him to receive the new detonation trigger codes. The young girl is
furious that she won’t be released by Jack, and she shoots the man who
has been her prisoner. He dies, leaving Jack no other connection to get
to Erwich.
Jack answers when Erwich calls Rossler’s phone. He pretends to be
Rossler when handing over the chip to Erwich’s men. The men kidnap
Jack to test out the trigger in a shopping mall. The President gives CTU
permission to allow the terrorists to set off the gas in the mall
because they would rather retrieve the other nineteen canisters and
prevent a major disaster. Yet Jack disobeys orders and gives the
terrorists the wrong detonation code. The men manually release some of
the gas into the mall and one of them escapes. Jack and Curtis chase him
to the hideout, but Erwich and the remaining nerve gas canisters are
gone.
McGill orders that Jack be brought into custody for failing to apprehend
the terrorists with the nerve gas. Jack receives a call through Audrey
from Nathanson, who masterminded the plot with Cummings. Nathanson has a
lead, but will deal with no one else. Jack is forced to escape from
Curtis to meet up with him. The terrorist gunmen follow and shoot
Nathanson. Before he dies, he hands Jack a computer chip that has
information about the nerve gas. Jack transmits the information to
Chloe, who finds a company with materials to make nerve gas. Jack
recognizes the company as the employer of Christopher Henderson, someone
he used to know.
After Chloe gets him access to Omicron, Jack meets up with his old CTU
mentor, Christopher Henderson. Despite Jack’s previous involvement
incriminating Henderson in a CTU internal investigation, Henderson
promises to help uncover how his company’s nerve gas was stolen by
terrorists. Henderson brings Jack to a bunker and then locks him inside
with a bomb. Jack realizes in time that he’s been duped, and he
manages to survive the explosion.
Jack goes to Henderson’s house to tap into his home computer. He tells
Henderson’s wife Miriam about her husband’s crimes but she doesn’t
believe him. Jack and Chloe are unable to hack into the system without a
password. Henderson returns home with a briefcase full of money, denying
any connection to the nerve gas. He taunts Jack to use his gun, but Jack
shoots Miriam in the leg instead. Henderson won’t save his wife and
still refuses to answer. Jack is forced to take Henderson to CTU for
interrogation.
Jack helplessly tries to convince Kim that he lied about his death only
to protect her. Kim doesn’t show any feeling toward him. While dealing
with this personal situation, Jack is unable to get Henderson to confess
under torture. When a terrorist infiltrates CTU, Jack is forced to
stabilize Henderson before he dies. Jack shoots the terrorist but
realizes that the man has leaked nerve gas into CTU. Jack and the agents
are sealed into protected offices along with Audrey and Kim. Yet other
workers, including Edgar, are not saved from the gas and are killed.
While trapped in the conference room, Jack puts a chokehold on Barry and
accuses him of taking advantage of Kim. Kim explains that Barry
convinced her not to commit suicide. With no other hope of preventing
the nerve gas from killing everyone, Jack climbs behind walls to get to
the infected areas. He holds his breath to protect himself, but he
cannot get to the computer that is blocking the air conditioning system.
Jack convinces McGill, who is the closest to the computer, to access it.
However, this means McGill will die. McGill is able to turn the air
conditioning back on and the nerve gas is flushed out. Jack runs to the
medical unit where Tony has threatened to murder Henderson. Yet Jack is
too late -- Henderson has stabbed Tony with the syringe of lethal pain
medication and has escaped. Jack holds Tony as he dies.
After the name of an intelligence broker is retrieved from Henderson’s
computer, Jack and the TAC team raid the woman’s hotel room. They only
find her lover, who is actually a German operative on an undercover
mission. The agent refuses to give up the woman to Jack because he must
protect his own investigation. Jack offers to give him the classified
U.S. list of terrorist suspects, which Germany has wanted. The agent
agrees to trade his mark for the list, and he leads Jack to capture the
woman. Yet the agent discovers that Jack triggered the list to
self-destruct. Jack gives the woman full immunity in order to find out
the source that provided her the information to trade to Bierko. The
source is Audrey.
Jack gets Audrey to admit that she had an affair with Cummings, but he
believes that she is not involved with the terrorists. When Karen has
Audrey tortured, Jack rushes to get Collette to admit that she was lying
about Audrey being her contact. Henderson told Collette to use that
name. Collette’s information allows CTU to find the natural gas
company where the terrorists are going to distribute the Sentox. Jack
and Curtis raid the premises as Bierko releases the nerve gas. Jack is
able to explode a pipe that prevents the gas from entering the public
mainstream. He finds Bierko and throws him into a car, but the plant’s
explosion blasts the car.
Jack pulls Bierko from the explosion, but the terrorist is unconscious.
Wayne Palmer connects Jack with the First Lady’s aide, who has
evidence about the conspiracy and is being blackmailed by Henderson.
Jack and Wayne accompany the woman to turn over the evidence to
Henderson so that she can retrieve her kidnapped daughter. The two
manage to take down most of the guards, but Henderson escapes. The woman
tells Jack that President Logan is the one who gave Henderson his orders
to assassinate Palmer.
Jack deposits the wounded aide at a motel and takes her safe deposit box
key. He and Wayne apprehend the bank manager to let them in, and they
uncover a tape recording of Logan and Henderson discussing Palmer’s
murder. Henderson’s men surround the bank, and Jack trips the silent
alarm to bring the police out. The commandos fire at the police, and
Jack and Wayne are able to escape with the tape.
Jack turns Wayne over to Buchanan, and then goes to meet Audrey and
Heller at the airport. Instead of turning over the evidence to the
Attorney General, Heller has Jack and Audrey detained by the Secret
Service so that he can convince Logan to resign. Heller gives the tape
to one of the agents. Jack escapes from the restraints and grabs the
tape, but Henderson’s team arrives at the airport. Henderson takes
Audrey captive and slices an artery on her arm to get Jack to hand over
the tape. Jack has no choice but to give him the evidence so that he can
save Audrey from bleeding to death. Henderson gets away with the only
proof that Logan is responsible for Palmer’s death.
After Chloe finds Henderson on the satellite, Jack captures him. Yet
Henderson has hidden the tape and his men have been instructed to kill
Heller if they don’t hear from him. Jack has Chloe look on the
satellite for any stops by Henderson, and she sees that a car met him
before going to the airport to meet a diplomatic plane. Jack leaves
Audrey with the bound Henderson and heads back to the airport. He sneaks
into the cargo load of the jet readying for takeoff.
After Chloe finds the passenger information Jack knocks out the air
marshal and takes his gun. Jack traps the suspected passenger in the
cargo load area, but the man is innocent. Chloe discovers that the
copilot is the one who was working with Henderson. Although the pilot is
bound to turn the plane around with a possible hijack, Jack convinces
the man that his copilot has evidence of national security. Jack breaks
into the cockpit but the pilot has been knocked out. Jack forces the
copilot to hand over the tape recorder that Henderson gave him and to
land the plane.
With the military preparing to shoot him down, Jack forces the copilot
to land the plane on an open stretch of freeway. He escapes to
Curtis’s car and makes it back to CTU with the tape recording. Jack
hands it off to Chloe to clean up so that they can present it to the
Attorney General.
Jack learns that Miles erased the tape recording and he threatens him,
but Miles has been transferred to the White House to work for the
President. Buchanan and Karen convince Jack that they must use Henderson
to find Bierko. Jack begrudgingly offers Henderson full immunity and
Henderson leads them to one of Bierko’s contacts. When Jack hears
Henderson tell the contact that CTU is surrounding his building, Jack
has the TAC team raid the premises. Yet Henderson claims that Jack
jumped the gun and prohibited him from using the contact to download his
computer files. Jack has Chloe hack into the contact’s system and she
finds reference to a Russian submarine in America. Jack calls the Navy
office aboard the sub to warn him, but he is too late. Bierko and his
men take over the sub for its missiles.
Jack reluctantly gives Henderson a gun so that he can dismantle the
missiles once they have raided the submarine. Jack takes out Bierko, and
Henderson is able to shut down the missile launch. Henderson goes to
shoot Jack, but the gun that Jack gave him is empty. Jack kills
Henderson in revenge for the deaths of Palmer, Tony and Michelle.
Heading towards the President’s retreat, Jack enlists Chloe, Novick
and Pierce to help him get Logan to confess. He picks up Pierce so that
Jack can get aboard the helicopter that will take Logan to the airport.
Jack takes over as co-pilot on the helicopter ferrying Logan. He knocks
out the Secret Servicemen on board and has the pilot land at an empty
warehouse. Jack tries to get Logan to confess on video, but Logan
refuses to admit anything. He even threatens to shoot Logan. Jack
secretly slips a listening device into Logan’s pen, which the
President puts back in his pocket when he is rescued. Jack goes
willingly when Secret Service arrests him. After Logan is found guilty,
Audrey comes to see Jack and they kiss. Jack is called inside to take a
phone call from Kim, but is kidnapped by the Chinese who have found out
he is still alive and want justice for his raid on their consulate
eighteen months ago. They beat him and hide him on a ship headed for
China.

Character: Kim Bauer
Summary: After Audrey contacted her,
Kim comes to CTU with Barry Landes, her therapist and boyfriend. She is
shocked to find out that Jack is still alive. Kim doesn’t even hug her
father when she sees him. Jack tries to explain why he couldn’t tell
her the truth but Kim is angry. When the nerve gas is released in CTU,
Kim and Barry are whisked to a protected room with the agents.
When Jack threatens Barry, Kim explains that he helped her when Jack
wasn’t around. Kim learns that Chloe had been sending Jack information
on her while he was in hiding. Kim tells Jack that she can’t be around
him anymore because too many people die. He is heartbroken, but he gives
her the space she needs. When CTU is opened up, Jack orders Barry to
take Kim out of the city.
Actor: Kim Raver

Character: Audrey Raines
Summary: Audrey
returns to CTU for the first time in order to be liaison for the Defense
Department on the Palmer investigation.
Audrey is shocked to find out that Jack may be alive. Yet even with the
evidence mounting against Jack, Audrey refuses to believe that he would
murder his friends.
Audrey hears Jack’s voice when he calls Buchanan. Jack still doesn’t
know that Audrey is at CTU.
When McGill wants Jack arrested over Palmer’s assassination, Audrey
points out that the evidence and Chloe’s testimony prove that Jack was
not responsible. She is sure he was framed. McGill orders Jack in for
questioning anyway.
With CTU overextended, McGill asks Audrey to debrief Diane. Audrey
awkwardly asks her about her relationship with Jack. Audrey sees Jack
for the first time, and he apologizes for not telling her that he is
alive. Audrey no longer blames him for her husband Paul’s death.
Diane confronts Audrey, telling her that Jack is still in love with her.
Diane urges her to leave him alone if she doesn’t feel the same way.
Audrey asks Jack if he is returning to her, but he cannot answer.
Jack asks Audrey to contact his daughter Kim and bring her to CTU. Jack
wants to tell Kim that he is alive. Audrey cannot get in touch with her.
Audrey disagrees with Buchanan and McGill’s assessment that they
should give up the people in the mall in order to retrieve the other
canisters. She refuses to sacrifice innocent lives, no matter what the
greater cost. Yet the President overrules her argument. Jack disobeys
this order but the terrorists manually open the canister and release
some gas into the mall.
Audrey defends Jack’s actions to McGill, who wants Jack taken into
custody. Audrey pleads with Buchanan to intervene. Nathanson calls
Audrey and demands to be connected to Jack so that he can help him
retrieve the nerve gas. When Jack escapes, McGill accuses Audrey of
assisting. Audrey begs Chloe to erase her phone records so that the call
to Jack isn’t found. With McGill over her shoulder, Audrey sends an
incoming call from Jack to Chloe. McGill notices Audrey messaging Chloe
and he wants a lockdown on information. Since he can’t touch Audrey
because she is the Defense Secretary’s daughter, McGill has Buchanan
apprehended for insubordination.
Audrey and Chloe help Jack enter the corporation responsible for
manufacturing the nerve gas. McGill catches them, but Audrey lies about
what they are doing. When McGill continues to impede Jack’s
investigation, Audrey implores Curtis to invoke a clause that removes
McGill from office on the basis of mental instability. Curtis only
agrees when McGill attempts to arrest Audrey, Chloe and Edgar for
interfering in his command. Buchanan is reinstated.
When the Defense Department gets intelligence from the Russians, Audrey
learns that Bierko is the man who is funding the terrorist plot.
Audrey gives Kim the news that her father is alive. She explains that he
didn’t tell her the truth in order to protect her.
Jack tells Audrey that he will be at fault if anything happens to Kim
because he convinced her to stay at CTU. When Kim tells Jack she
doesn’t want to be part of his life, Audrey takes Jack’s hand for
comfort.
Audrey asks Buchanan why Homeland Security is being aggressive about
questioning CTU staff. He doesn’t tell her about the change in
authority.
Audrey is taken into custody, and Jack questions whether she knew
Cummings. Audrey admits that she slept with him once but she is not
involved with the terrorist plot. Jack believes her, but Karen insists
on torturing Audrey. Jack finds out that Audrey was not the contact and
he stops the interrogation. Audrey tells him that she knew he would save
her.
The Homeland people ask Audrey to sign a statement that blames Buchanan
for all of the mishaps caused during the day’s events. She initially
refuses to sign it, but when Jack needs help covering the terrorists,
Audrey agrees to the document in exchange for them giving her the use of
Chloe.
Jack has Audrey leave CTU and contact her father. She goes to meet
Heller at the airport where he will land. Audrey figures out that Karen
has agents following her, and she dumps the transponder they attached to
her car.
Audrey arranges for Jack to present to her father the tape recording
that incriminates Logan. Heller has Audrey and Jack detained by his
Secret Service detail so that he can get Logan to resign on his own.
Jack and Audrey escape from their restraints, but Henderson arrives and
takes Audrey captive. He slices Audrey’s arm and threatens to let her
bleed to death unless Jack gives him the tape. Jack does so, and ties a
tourniquet around Audrey’s arm to save her.
After Jack stabilizes Audrey’s bleeding, they capture Henderson.
Henderson informs her that his men are following her father and plan to
take him out. She is shocked when Heller drives his car off a cliff to
get away. Audrey urges Jack to go find the tape while she waits with the
bound Henderson. When Henderson’s henchmen arrive, Audrey is saved by
Curtis and the CTU tac team.
Audrey finds out that her father survived the crash. Jack comes to see
her and she is relieved that he was able to retrieve the evidence. They
share a tender moment together.
Audrey can’t believe CTU would offer Henderson immunity because he
tried to kill her father, but Jack explains that they have no other
choice.
Audrey asks the Navy to prepare F-18 jets to shoot at the Russian sub
because it has been seized by terrorists. After Jack prevents the
missiles, the F-18s are called back.
Audrey comes to see Jack after Logan is arrested. Jack kisses her.
Audrey becomes panicked and alerts the agents when Jack goes missing.
Actor: Carlos Bernard

Character: Tony
Almeida
Summary: Tony
and his wife Michelle debate whether to help CTU in the Palmer
assassination. They have started their own company, and Tony thinks they
should not interfere with their old employer. Michelle is killed when
her car explodes outside their house. Tony is injured in the blast, and
is taken to CTU for treatment on his head trauma so that he can be
protected.
Tony wakes up, inquiring about Michelle. Yet no one will tell him the
truth. He sneaks to the CTU computer and looks up Michelle’s file.
When he finds out she is dead, he breaks down.
Tony demands to know why Michelle was murdered. Buchanan tells him about
the larger plot involving Palmer and of Henderson’s involvement. Tony,
who knew Henderson from CTU, warns Buchanan not to let Henderson cut
himself a deal.
Tony learns that Henderson, the man who was responsible for killing
Michelle, is now in the same room with him after the nerve gas lockdown.
Tony grabs the guarding agent’s gun and threatens to kill Henderson.
Jack talks him out of it over intercom. When Henderson lapses into a
coma, Tony wants to inject him with a lethal dose of the medicine. Yet
he can’t bring himself to do it. The alert Henderson takes Tony’s
hand and forces him to stab himself. When Jack gets there, he finds that
Henderson has escaped. Tony dies in Jack’s arms.
Actor:
Mary Lynn Rajskub

Character:
Chloe O'Brian
Summary: Chloe, who has just hooked up with her
subordinate Spenser, is chased by the men who killed Palmer and
Michelle. She calls Jack, and meets him at an oil refinery after going
dark from CTU.
Chloe drives Jack in the assassin’s van to Wayne Palmer’s building.
She taps into her CTU account from the laptop in the van in order to
monitor agency deployment. She helps Jack enter the apartment without
interference. When she is located by CTU, Chloe tries to escape and
surrenders to the agents. She is put on the phone with Buchanan, and
explains that Jack has been set up. No one believes her, and she is
carted to CTU as a prisoner.
Buchanan allows Chloe to work through the crisis because she is an
asset. Yet she goes behind Buchanan’s back to aid Jack in saving
Derek. Chloe appeals to Spenser for help, and he obliges.
Chloe thinks Buchanan isn’t convinced they can save the hostages. She
is directed to go through McGill from now on, but is annoyed because she
thinks McGill is more of a hindrance.
Edgar tells Chloe that he is upset she couldn’t trust him with her
secrets. Chloe goes to make up with Spenser, but sees that he has been
using a higher security clearance than authorized. She immediately
notifies Buchanan, and they take Spenser into custody. Chloe feels
betrayed by Spenser because of their relationship, and Spenser accuses
her of trying to get revenge on him. He claims that the President had
him spy on Jack and CTU as part of an internal investigation.
Chloe is still annoyed with having to report to McGill, but she manages
to find the boat where the nerve gas is hidden.
When she is required to hack into the specialized security building of
the man helping the terrorists, Chloe asks Buchanan to allow her to use
Spenser because he is more experienced with that skill. Chloe is
unsentimental with Spenser, and has him taken away when he has completed
his task.
Chloe helps Jack install the chip into the trigger. Then she tracks the
terrorists through the chip, but CTU loses Erwich and the nineteen other
nerve gas canisters.
Audrey admits to Chloe that she called Jack with a link to the
terrorists, which forced him to escape. She asks Chloe to delete her
phone records so that McGill doesn't learn of her complicity. Then when
Jack calls in with a chip from Nathanson, Audrey connects him to Chloe
because McGill is over her shoulder. Chloe finds that the chip is
encrypted by the Defense Department, so she gets Buchanan to distract
McGill and allow Audrey to relay her Defense password. Chloe decrypts
the file and passes the information to Jack about a corporation that has
acquired the materials to make nerve gas.
Chloe asks Edgar to help cover her while she works with Jack. Yet McGill
finds her with Audrey and reprimands her. When Edgar discovers a link
between terrorist chatter and the route of the Russian presidential
motorcade, Chloe brings it to McGill. He refuses to allow them to look
into it. Chloe hacks into McGill’s system in order to alert the Secret
Service of the possible threat, but McGill wants her arrested. Curtis
intervenes and has McGill apprehended.
When Jack gets to Henderson’s computer Chloe is unable to quickly hack
the password unlocking the satellite phone numbers he has been calling.
Chloe tells Kim to cut Jack some slack because those who knew that he
was alive were being killed. When the nerve gas gets released in CTU,
Chloe manages to cordon off some of the rooms with a protective
biohazard seal. Unfortunately, Edgar is locked out. Chloe cries as she
watches Edgar fall to his death.
Chloe is in shock after watching Edgar die right in front of her. Jack
forces her to get back to work. After she finds that a corrosive agent
in the nerve gas is eating away at the protective seals on the isolated
offices, Chloe thinks she can stop it by forcing the air conditioning to
blast. Yet the system is being blocked by a program running on a
computer in an infected area. McGill is able to access it, which frees
Chloe to flush out the nerve gas.
Chloe manages to get the name of Bierko’s intelligence broker off
Henderson’s computer. Yet when Miles from Homeland Security takes away
her keycard, Chloe has to steal it from his desk to help Jack get a
terrorist list from the NSA network. Miles figures out what she did and
reports it to his boss. Chloe is chastised for insubordination.
Chloe helps Jack by discovering that Audrey had an affair with Cummings
and that Collette knew Henderson. When Miles starts bothering the new
techie, Chloe comes to her rescue because the girl had previously
accused him of sexual harassment. Yet Chloe realizes that the techie was
delusional about Miles’ advances.
Chloe is furious when she learns that Audrey signed a Homeland statement
that lays blame on Buchanan for the mistakes caused during the day’s
events. Yet Audrey confides that she only did it in order to retain
Chloe on staff because Jack needs her.
Chloe helps Audrey find the transponder that Karen put on her car to
follow her. Then Chloe distorts the satellite when Miles has it search
for Audrey. When Miles goes to accuse her of wrongdoing, Chloe sneaks to
the restroom so that it appears she was in there instead of altering the
satellite.
Chloe learns from Shari that Miles has tracked Audrey. When Chloe tries
to warn Audrey, Miles traces the call. He places her in the holding
room, but Chloe pickpockets his keycard and escapes. Shari wants to
alert Miles, but Chloe threatens to have her sent for a psych evaluation
with false sexual harassment claims. Shari lets her go, and Chloe heads
to Buchanan’s house. She feels responsible for getting Jack and Audrey
caught.
From Buchanan’s house, Chloe accesses CTU’s satellites to help Jack
find Henderson and the plane carrying the person with the tape
recording. Yet when Karen alerts her that CTU has traced her there,
Chloe refuses to leave until she gets Jack the plane’s passenger list.
Chloe escapes from Buchanan’s house before the Homeland agents can
catch her. She sets up in a hotel bar and has Karen help her access CTU
data. Chloe finds a suspect in the plane passenger manifest, but it
turns out to be wrong. She then discovers that the copilot was a last
minute fill-in and has ties to Henderson. Chloe gets this information to
Jack and he is able to get the tape recording.
Chloe is brought back to CTU to help Jack avoid being shot down. When
Jack brings in the tape recorder, Chloe works on cleaning up the audio
to present it as evidence. She doesn’t see Miles do something to the
recording.
Chloe realizes that the tape recorder has been erased by Miles and all
their evidence is gone. She is able to tap into the computer of one of
Bierko’s associates and finds plans for a Russian submarine docked in
Los Angeles.
Chloe connects Jack to an officer aboard the sub who survived the
attack. After the missiles are dismantled, Chloe reluctantly agrees to
assist Jack in getting Logan to confess to his crimes. She brings in her
ex-husband Morris to help at CTU.
Chloe has Morris assist her in helping Jack. She sets up a video feed
for Jack to pretend to get Logan’s confession. She also tapes a
conversation between Logan and Martha caught on a planted listening
device. Chloe contacts the Attorney General herself, and plays the tape
of Logan’s admission of guilt. Buchanan gives Chloe a photo of her and
Edgar, and she tears up.
Actor: Gregory Itzin

Character: President Charles Logan
Summary: While preparing to
sign an arms treaty with the Russian president, Logan learns that former
President Palmer has been assassinated. He refuses to postpone the
day’s events. When his wife Martha says that Palmer may have been
killed because of her, Logan dismisses her claims as delusions.
Although Russian President Suvarov may be in jeopardy, Logan does not
want any changes to the summit’s proceedings. Logan receives from
Cummings the tape of Martha’s conversation with Palmer. There is
nothing of national security on the audio. He plays it for her to prove
that she is delusional and should be back on her medication.
The President is pulled away from the summit to deal with the hostage
situation. Logan wants it resolved by the time he has to sign the treaty
and is horrified when the terrorists start killing civilians. He is
furious when he finds out that CTU has been working with Jack inside the
airport. Logan was not told that Jack is no longer a suspect in
Palmer’s murder.
As innocent hostages are being killed, Logan finally offers to postpone
the summit. His aide Cummings encourages him to stay on course. Logan is
apprehensive, but does so. Even Suvarov notes that they will look like
fools signing the treaty if the attack backfires. Yet when CTU saves the
hostages, Logan boasts about it to the press. Martha tries to talk to
her husband, but Logan brushes her away.
Martha tells her husband that someone knocked her out to steal proof
that Palmer had tried to warn her about the terrorist plot. Logan
doesn’t believe her and fears that her crazy ramblings will hurt him
politically. Cummings convinces him to have her committed. Yet she
escapes from the premises.
Logan is shocked when Cummings confesses that he set up the terrorists
with the nerve gas so that they could prove there are weapons of mass
destruction in Central Asia. This would allow America to beef up its
military and secure oil. Cummings has an inside man who will detonate
the canisters before it reaches Moscow. Logan has no choice but to go
along with this because there is no turning back, even though Cummings
was responsible for Palmer’s death. Jack gets Cummings to divulge
where the nerve gas is, and Logan has Cummings arrested. With the
Chinese still after him, Jack agrees to disappear once the terrorist
threat is over. Yet when the boat is raided, the nerve gas is gone. The
terrorists found out that Cummings had been deceiving them.
Fearing that the nerve gas will be unleashed, the President asks Jack to
be reinstated regardless of what will happen with the Chinese. Although
Novick suggests they hide Cummings’ involvement, Logan takes
Martha’s advice about telling the truth to the public. He has her
write a statement for the press. Yet all plans go out the window when
Cummings is found dead after committing suicide.
Since Cummings cannot take responsibility for his crimes, Logan agrees
with Novick’s plan to absolve Cummings for the nerve gas leak. Martha
is furious that Logan has lied. When CTU is faced with allowing the
terrorists to perform a field test with one nerve gas canister in a
populated mall in order to retrieve the other canisters, they defer to
the President’s decision. Logan is panicked about ordering the murder
of innocent people, but he gives in to CTU’s assessment.
Logan is anxious that CTU hasn’t found the nerve gas. He becomes even
more so when Bierko the terrorist leader calls. Bierko plans to release
the nerve gas in the United States unless Logan provides the Russian
president’s motorcade route. Bierko wants to assassinate him. When
Martha overhears a conversation about this, Logan is forced to tell her
the situation. She tries to convince him not to give in to the
terrorists, but he feels he has no other choice.
Logan finds out that Martha is in the car with the Russian president. He
is forced to sacrifice his own wife in order to prevent the nerve gas
from being inflicted on the public. Yet when CTU learns of the threat
against the motorcade, they alert the Secret Service. The car is
attacked but Martha and the Suvarovs are saved. Logan tries to tell
Bierko that he kept up his end of the bargain, but Bierko intends to
inflict harm on America for allying with the Russians.
Martha refuses to speak with Logan because he did not stand up to the
terrorists. He lies to Suvarov about what was known about the ambush and
nerve gas. When Suvarov suggests that Martha seemed distracted even
before the attack, Logan dismisses this as an episode of her
psychological disorder.
Logan calls Vice President Gardner to the retreat to help manage the
crisis. Gardner proposes a more aggressive approach to combat the nerve
gas threat that includes enacting martial law. Novick disagrees, but
Logan wants to take this hard line approach. Martha lets her husband
know that she still stands by him and loves him regardless of what
happened. Logan is relieved by her support.
Logan follows Vice President Gardner’s plan to put Homeland Security
in charge of CTU’s operations and enact martial law in Los Angeles. He
breaks down to Martha that he no longer knows what to do. She assures
him that she will support his decision.
Although his wife tries to dissuade him, Logan declares martial law on
Los Angeles. Logan is annoyed when commentators wonder whether this is
legal, but Vice President Gardner assures the President that he is in
control of the situation.
Gardner is concerned that Wayne Palmer was at the retreat to see Aaron
Pierce. Logan is not bothered by this because he knows that Pierce was a
friend of President Palmer. It is revealed that Logan is the one behind
the conspiracy. Henderson reports to Logan that he failed to retrieve
the evidence that names him. Henderson promises Logan that he will kill
Jack and Wayne, and suppress whatever evidence there exists.
Henderson assures Logan that he will find Jack and the tape implicating
them. Logan blames Henderson for the situation spiraling out of control
and his eagerness to kill Palmer. Logan issues a warrant for Jack’s
arrest, making it a priority for Homeland Security and CTU. He claims to
have new evidence. Gardner is angry that he wasn’t consulted. The
President makes a public announcement that the terrorist threat has been
defeated. Yet when he gets a call from Henderson about Jack, Logan asks
Martha to give him privacy.
When CTU traces Audrey, Logan alerts Henderson of the location. Logan
has Karen pull back her team so that he can send in the military
instead. Karen appeals to Novick about the decision, so Novick questions
Logan. Heller arrives at the retreat to demand Logan’s resignation.
But when Henderson retrieves the tape, Logan asks for Heller’s
resignation and has him removed from the premises.
Henderson tells the President that he did not destroy the tape so that
he will have protection. Henderson doesn’t want to be the victim of a
“suicide” like Cummings. Logan is forced to tell his fellow
conspirators to end to the plan to kill Henderson. In return, he will
silence his wife. Logan confesses to Martha that he was involved in the
Palmer assassination, and he begs her to remain quiet to protect the
American people. Although he is relieved that she will keep his secret,
Logan is disturbed that he has lost his wife’s love and trust.
Novick questions whether he and Martha are hiding something, but Logan
brushes it off as marital discord. When the President orders the plane
brought down and Jack arrested, Novick is alarmed by this decision.
Logan claims that Jack has been lying to them and is now trying to
escape. Graham warns Logan to shoot down the plane so that Jack and the
tape recording are destroyed.
After Graham makes the plane appear as if it was hijacked, Logan orders
it to be shot down. The plane lands and Logan is forced to abort. He
orders Jack to be captured, but Jack escapes and gets the tape to CTU.
Logan considers suicide, but then gets a reprieve from Miles who plans
to intercept the incriminating tape at CTU to garner the President’s
favor.
Logan tells Karen that Jack is no longer a suspect and can be released.
He then tries to convince Pierce to keep quiet, but Pierce calls him a
traitor. Logan orders Pierce to be killed. Logan informs Graham that the
recording has been destroyed and that Jack will be taken care of. Yet
all of his plans go awry when Bierko escapes and plans another terrorist
attack.
With the terrorist threat averted, Logan plans to escort Palmer’s body
back to Washington. He tells Graham that Jack will be killed. Logan is
about to leave for the airport when Martha begs for his forgiveness. She
entices him with sex and Logan delays his departure.
Logan is kidnapped by Jack and taken to an empty warehouse. Jack trains
a camera on him but Logan refuses to confess his part in the conspiracy.
Jack threatens to shoot him. The Secret Service arrives to save Logan,
and Jack is captured. Logan goes to the airport to meet Palmer’s
casket. Martha lashes out at him for killing Palmer, and Logan accuses
her of working against him. Logan goes back out to deliver the eulogy
for Palmer. When Logan finishes his speech, he is arrested. Jack had
placed a wiretap on Logan, and his private conversation with Martha was
recorded and played for the Attorney General. Logan gives one last
glance at Martha and Novick, who betrayed him, before he is taken away.
Actor: James Morrison

Character: Bill Buchanan
Summary: After Palmer is
killed, Buchanan advises the President to postpone a summit in case it
is connected to the event. Logan refuses to do so. When Michelle and
Tony are also targeted, CTU works to figure out what their connection is
to Palmer.
With evidence of Jack at the crime scene and a backtrack of phone logs,
Buchanan deduces that Jack is still alive and that Palmer, Tony,
Michelle and Chloe helped fake his death. Buchanan puts out a warrant
for Jack’s arrest in the assassination of Palmer. When Chloe is
captured, Buchanan demands that she tell him where Jack is. Chloe
refuses, but insists that Jack is being framed.
After Jack is cleared of murdering Palmer, he calls Buchanan from inside
the airport and feeds CTU intelligence to help them capture the
terrorists. Buchanan tries to make an offer to Beresch, the leader of
the group. Beresch does not accept the trade and he begins killing the
hostages, one by one.
Despite Buchanan’s ire, Lynn McGill from District takes over command
of CTU. When Jack instructs CTU to alter its formation for attack,
McGill questions this but Buchanan has Curtis’ team change its
position. At the last second, McGill realizes that Jack has been using
an old duress signal to warn CTU that he is captured. He convinces
Buchanan to go back to the original formation, and it proves successful.
Buchanan admits that McGill was right.
When Chloe has proof that Spenser was performing unauthorized tasks with
a higher security clearance, Buchanan interrogates him. Spenser
initially doesn’t break but admits that he was hired by the White
House to internally investigate Jack and CTU. Cummings was his contact.
When Cummings arranges for CTU to be taken off the terrorist
investigation, Buchanan knows that something is wrong. He argues with
McGill about disregarding the order and accuses McGill of being
inexperienced. After Cummings is exposed, the President grants CTU back
its jurisdiction over the case.
CTU figures out that the canisters cannot be used without the detonation
codes. After Edgar traces Erwich’s call, Buchanan has Jack go to the
man who will help Erwich reconfigure the detonation. He sends Curtis and
a team to meet Jack there. McGill orders Jack to give in to the man’s
demands for immunity in order to stop Erwich.
Buchanan agrees with McGill’s plan to set off the one canister of
nerve gas inside the mall in hopes of retrieving the other nineteen
canisters. This will prevent casualties on a larger scale. Buchanan
turns to the President to make the final decision and Logan goes along
with their assessment about saving the greater good. Yet Jack disobeys
orders and refuses to give the terrorists the detonation code. The
terrorists manually release some of the gas and CTU is able to contain
the threat in the mall to a few casualties.
With McGill’s suspicion arising, Buchanan acknowledges that Jack and
Audrey had an intimate relationship. When Audrey confesses to him that
Jack escaped arrest in order to pick up a lead on the nerve gas,
Buchanan helps Audrey and Chloe work with Jack by distracting McGill.
McGill senses that there is insubordination occurring in his command,
and he has Buchanan taken into custody.
Audrey convinces Curtis to intervene and have McGill labeled as mentally
unstable. Buchanan is brought out of holding and reinstated. Buchanan
immediately alerts Logan and the Secret Service to the threat on the
Russian president. This allows the First Lady and the Suvarovs to be
saved.
Curtis gives Buchanan a blueprint found on the dead terrorists at the
motorcade ambush. Edgar tracks down the building as a hospital, and
Buchanan orders it to be evacuated. Curtis is able to trap the canister
in a chemical container that saves the nerve gas from being released in
the hospital.
Buchanan tells Tony the truth about why Michelle was killed and about
Henderson’s involvement in the conspiracy. When McGill gets the news
about his sister’s death, he admits to Buchanan that she stole his CTU
keycard. Buchanan quickly has Chloe confirm the keycard was used to
breach security. He locks down the building, which leads to Jack
shooting the terrorist that infiltrated CTU. This gives them a brief
warning to the nerve gas that has been emitted inside.
Buchanan speaks to the personnel in the safe zones of CTU and warns them
of the nerve gas leaking into their areas. Curtis reports that he
can’t get the chemical response team to CTU for a while, so Buchanan
directs his staff to find any means they can gather to find a solution.
Karen Hayes and her Homeland Security staff arrive to take over
authority of CTU. Yet Buchanan is forced into not revealing this to his
staff. Buchanan fights Karen over retaining CTU’s autonomy.
Buchanan takes Audrey into custody but he doesn't believe that she is
guilty. He fights Karen over the use of torture to break Audrey.
Despite his intention to protest Homeland’s assumption of power,
Buchanan feels betrayed when he finds out that Audrey signed a statement
that blames him for CTU’s mistakes. He leaves the office.
Jack calls Buchanan for help keeping Wayne safe while he hands over the
evidence to Secretary Heller. Buchanan also lets Chloe hide out at his
house and access CTU from his computer.
Buchanan lets Chloe use his home computer to access CTU’s satellite
for Jack. He tries to delay the diplomatic jet holding the person with
the tape recording but cannot stop it. Karen calls Buchanan to warn him
that CTU has traced Chloe there. Karen admits that she is now starting
to believe the theory that Logan is behind the terrorist attack.
Buchanan urges Chloe to get out before CTU comes to arrest her, but she
refuses to leave until she can get Jack his information.
Although she is helping Chloe, Karen has Buchanan brought into CTU
instead of allowing the field agents to interrogate him. Miles is
suspicious of this action, and he questions her. Karen says she wants to
grill Buchanan herself. Karen tells Buchanan that, although she is still
skeptical, she will help Jack in order to confirm the evidence he claims
to have.
Working with Karen, Buchanan finds Jack a freeway to land the plane.
They then send Curtis to pick up Jack and make sure the tape doesn’t
fall into the hands of Logan’s people.
When Bierko escapes, finding him becomes CTU’s priority. Buchanan and
Karen want to offer Henderson immunity for info on Bierko, but Jack is
resistant at first. He relents, and gets information that leads them a
Russian submarine parked in Los Angeles. Bierko uses a remaining Sentox
gas canister to take over the sub for its missiles.
Buchanan grants Chloe’s ex-husband a security clearance to help her
with the remaining protocols.
Buchanan thinks he will be fired from CTU once the Vice President takes
over the Oval Office, but Karen says she will make sure that won’t
happen. Buchanan invites her out to breakfast, but Karen is summoned to
District. She asks him if they can go out another time.
Actor: Jean Smart

Character: Martha Logan
Summary: The First Lady learns
that her good friend David Palmer was murdered. She tries to tell her
husband that Palmer wanted to discuss an issue of national security with
her before he was killed. Logan promises his wife he will have her
claims looked into.
Martha knows that her husband doesn’t believe her allegations about
her connection to Palmer’s death. When Logan plays her the audio of
her phone conversation with the former President, Martha is adamant that
this wasn’t the right tape. Logan convinces her that she is being
delusional and needs to go back on her medication.
Martha is convinced that the hostage situation is related to what Palmer
had called her about. She bribes an aide to give her access to written
phone transcripts, and she finds proof of her real call with Palmer. She
hides the paper inside her bra.
Martha holds on to the paper transcript until she has her husband’s
undivided attention. After the treaty is signed, she tries to speak to
Logan but he dismisses her. Cummings knocks out Martha and takes the
paper from her.
Martha is revived, and she claims that she was knocked out by someone
who stole her proof of Palmer’s call. Yet Logan doesn’t believe his
wife. Martha realizes that Logan is going to have her committed, and she
sneaks out the bathroom window.
Martha is found by Secret Service Agent Pierce, and she tries to tell
him that she is being framed. As Martha is being driven away, Logan
stops the car to apologize. She was right all along about a conspiracy.
Martha is still angry that her husband went along with Cummings’ plan
to have her committed.
Martha admonishes her husband for not believing her, but she puts aside
her anger to help him. When Novick suggests they cover up Cummings’
involvement, Martha advises Logan to tell the truth about the situation.
Logan agrees with her and she drafts a press statement for him. Yet they
are shocked to find that Cummings has committed suicide.
Martha feels betrayed when Logan ignores the statement she wrote and
issues a press release absolving Cummings for the terrorist events. Yet
when meeting Cummings’ bereaved widow, she cannot bring herself to
tell the woman the truth. She doesn’t say that Cummings was a traitor.
Martha is horrified that her husband would consider giving the
terrorists information to kill the Russian president in return for
preventing release of the nerve gas on American soil. She pleads with
him, but Logan insists that he has no other choice. At the last minute,
Martha jumps in the limo taking the Suvarovs to the airport, hoping that
this will convince Logan to save all of their lives.
On the way to the airport, Martha doesn’t understand why the motorcade
is not being rerouted to avoid the terrorists. Yet she doesn’t let on
her fear to the Suvarovs. Agent Pierce is notified of the threat, and
when he has the motorcade turned around they are attacked. The limo is
hit by a missile, but Martha and the Suvarovs survive inside the armored
vehicle. Pierce takes out the terrorists and they are saved.
Martha tells Agent Pierce that her husband knew about the attack on the
motorcade but didn’t try to save her. After she is flown back to the
retreat, she refuses to speak to Logan. She thanks Agent Pierce for
saving her life and takes his hand. Novick sees this and dismisses
Pierce.
Novick tells Martha that Logan was anguished over his decision that
would have cost her life. He admits that he doesn’t agree with the
Vice President’s new forceful plan, and he asks Martha to convince
Logan to take a safer tack. She believes that Logan isn’t as naïve as
everyone assumes, but she agrees to assure her husband that she stands
by him. Logan is comforted to know that she still loves him.
Martha, who mistrusts Vice President Gardner, doesn’t understand why
her husband would let Gardner create policy. Novick convinces her to
speak to Logan. Martha tells Logan that she will stand by him if this is
his decision.
With CTU’s new lead on the terrorists, Martha tries to discourage her
husband from declaring martial law. Yet he is insistent on following
Gardner’s lead. Martha tells Logan that Gardner is trying to bring him
down.
Martha says goodbye to her aide, Evelyn, who leaves the office for the
day.
With the terrorist threat appearing to be over, Martha tells Logan that
she is proud of his actions. She apologizes for being an inconvenience
to him over the course of the day. Yet when Logan wants her to leave so
that he can take a call, Martha becomes suspicious of his conversation.
Martha becomes more suspicious of her husband when Secretary Heller
arrives at the retreat in the middle of the night. She asks Pierce about
it, but he asks to speak to her outside. When she goes to meet Pierce,
she finds his cell phone on the ground. He is missing.
Martha creates a commotion when she questions where Pierce is. One of
the agents locks her into a room on the President’s orders. Logan
comes to tell her that he transferred Pierce. He also admits that he was
involved with Palmer’s murder even though he did not order it. Martha
is shocked at this revelation. She agrees to remain silent in order to
protect the nation’s integrity. But she tells Logan that she hates
him.
A distraught Martha appeals to Novick for her medication. Novick
suspects something is wrong with both her and the President. Martha
dismisses this as marital problems. After Novick gets Logan to agree to
give her some pills, a drugged out Martha asks her husband why he chose
not to reach out to her earlier. Logan says that he didn’t because she
has been on the verge of a breakdown for the past three years.
Logan comes to apologize to Martha but she refuses to give him any
sympathy. She can’t believe that he has put on such a charade to her
and the rest of the world.
Martha comes upon an agent holding Pierce hostage in the stables. Her
husband had told her that Pierce was transferred to Washington. The
agent is about to kill Pierce under orders from the President when
Martha grabs the man’s gun and shoots him. Pierce warns her to go back
to the retreat and not let on that he’s still alive. He wants her to
tell Novick what happened.
Martha enlists Novick to bring to light the truth about Logan. With
Novick’s help, Pierce escapes from the retreat after saying a tender
goodbye to Martha. Jack needs more time to get to the retreat, so Novick
asks Martha to stall the President’s departure. Martha apologizes to
Logan and seduces him into having sex with her.
After Martha stalls Logan with sex, she devises an excuse to get out of
traveling with him on the helicopter because Jack plans to kidnap him on
the chopper. She later meets her husband at the airport, and is
disappointed to learn that Jack could not get Logan to confess. Martha
becomes upset and accuses Logan of killing Palmer. He has her brought
into an empty hangar and they argue about his involvement in the
conspiracy. Logan knows she schemed against him and he threatens to send
her away for good. Yet when Logan is arrested, Martha cannot hide her
disdain for the man she once loved.
Actor: William Devane
Character: Secretary of Defense James Heller
Summary: The Secretary gets a call
from his daughter Audrey as he is on a jet traveling to Washington. She
wants to talk to him in person about the warrant for Jack’s arrest.
Heller re-routes his plane to Los Angeles.
Heller lands at the airport and Jack plays him the tape recording that
implicates Logan. Instead of turning this over to the Attorney General,
Heller has Jack and Audrey held captive while he tries to persuade Logan
to resign. Heller does not want to erode the office of the president. He
leaves the tape with one of the agents. Heller arrives at the retreat
and wants the Vice President to witness Logan’s resignation. Logan
receives a call from Henderson, and then orders Heller to resign. He has
Heller taken away by the Secret Service.
Heller informs Jack that Logan would not resign quietly. Jack blames
Heller for losing the tape because he wouldn’t listen to him. When he
sees that Henderson’s men are following him, Heller refuses to let
them make him a pawn in the conspiracy. He drives his car off a cliff
and plunges into a lake.
Heller survives the car crash and is treated for his injuries.
