The Cast & Characters
(Warning: The following summaries may contain spoilers as they are kept up-to-date)

Actor: Kiefer Sutherland

Character: Jack Bauer

Summary: Jack, who works for the Secretary of Defense, secretly dates his boss’s daughter, Audrey, the daughter of the Secretary of Defense and his boss. Jack visits CTU for the first time since he was fired. As he watches a raid on the train bomb suspect, Jack gives advice to Driscoll that allows them to catch the perp. Chloe’s info leads Jack to believe that the suspect has larger intentions. He barges into the interrogation room and shoots the suspect, who reveals that the target is really his boss Heller. Jack quickly notifies Audrey, but she and Heller are captured.
After Driscoll has Jack detained, Chloe helps him contact her programmer friend Andrew who is now being chased by the terrorists. Jack threatens Driscoll, and she agrees to let him assist field ops to bring in Andrew. Andrew gets kidnapped by the terrorists, and Jack wants to follow the car to see if it leads to Heller. The head of field ops overrules this, but he is killed. Jack takes the agent’s car to follow the abducted Andrew.
Jack refuses Driscoll’s orders to bring in the suspect who captured Andrew because he hopes the man will lead him to Heller. As he follows the suspect, Jack convinces Chloe to help him track the man on satellite. Jack saves Andrew’s life by taking out the other henchmen, and then follows the suspect to a convenience store. Since Chloe can’t get the satellite system up, Jack stalls for time by pretending to rob the store at gunpoint.
Jack takes the people in the store hostage, and grabs Kalil’s phone and gun in the process. A cop comes to the store and Jack takes him hostage too. When the police radio calls, the store clerk yells for help. Cops surround the store, and Jack takes Kalil out at gunpoint to escape in his car. When Chloe has the satellite up, Jack releases Kalil on the road and drives off. Chloe calls with Driscoll, who insists on picking up Kalil now that he is monitored. Jack is furious that he will lose the trace to Heller. Jack gets pulled over by the police who want to apprehend him for the store robbery.
After Driscoll confirms that he is working with CTU, Jack is released by the police. He is forced to call the local cops when Kalil is detained for an unrelated incident. Kalil becomes suspicious when he is quickly released, so Jack moves to apprehend him. He is too late. Kalil crashes his own car into a truck instead of leading the feds to Heller. Jack goes to the terrorists’ compound, but Driscoll warns him that the President ordered a strike on the complex which will kill anyone in the vicinity. With both Audrey and Heller’s lives at risk, Jack goes in alone.
Jack single-handedly saves Heller from the compound, and then with help from the Marines, rescues Audrey. He steps aside to let Audrey deal with her husband, who has shown up at CTU. Jack figures out that the terrorists have in their possession a stolen device that could cause a meltdown at any of the country’s nuclear reactors. The broadcast trial with Heller was only an internet distraction so that the terrorists could tap into the reactor plants’ computer systems.
Jack takes Audrey to the security company that has footage of the man Audrey saw at the compound. The place is raided by terrorists, who kill the other CTU agents on site. Jack manages to get the footage downloaded onto memory sticks. Knowing that CTU has been compromised, he calls Tony Almeida for help. Tony arrives just in time to save Jack and Audrey from being killed.
Jack dispatches Heller to flush out the mole in CTU. He reviews the surveillance footage at Tony’s house and has the Defense Department identify the man Audrey that recognized at the compound. Jack goes with Tony to pick up the man, who is trying to flee the city. The man is killed by a sniper before Jack can take him into custody.
Jack finds a cell number on the murdered suspect’s phone that leads him to Dina Araz. Driscoll plays back a traced conversation where Dina and Behrooz discuss her husband trying to kill her son. To get Dina to give him information on the Override, Jack has the President issue a pardon for
Behrooz. Dina convinces Behrooz to obey the authorities, but when they go to pick him up they find that Navi has already captured the boy. Jack chases them to a garage, where they escape into the basement.
Jack sneaks into the room where Navi is hiding with Behrooz. As Jack moves in to apprehend them, Behrooz shoots his father dead. Dina provides Jack with an address of a house used by her group, and Jack finds there a bunker with schematics and maps of the plot. CTU learns that Paul Raines is linked to the owners of the house, and Jack asks Audrey to contact her husband. When Audrey agrees to meet Paul alone, Jack races to her. He gets there just in time to prevent Paul from hurting Audrey.
Jack finds out that the name on Paul’s lease is an alias for Marwan, who was also named by Marianne. Jack goes to the building where Curtis took Marianne. He meets up with Curtis, who has escaped from Marwan’s gang. Jack and Curtis go to the office where Marwan is but they can’t identify him among the many workers. Marwan flees and Jack goes after him. Curtis apprehends the Override device, and Edgar is able to thwart the meltdowns. Marwan steals a CTU uniform and tries to escape as an agent.
Jack takes Paul to the company that built the Override device because Marwan was an employee there. Jack’s suspicions about the company are proved correct when he discovers that they have recently purged Marwan’s files. As Paul tries to recover the documents, Jack realizes that the company had been developing a pulse bomb for the military and that they set it off to destroy any internal files and communication. Jack tries to contain the just-detonated EMP bomb but he is too late.
Jack and Paul escape from the company headquarters and hide out in a sporting goods store where they arm themselves with rifles. Jack initiates a firefight with the mercenaries so that they use their radios. This will signal CTU to their location. Jack holds the commandos off long enough for the CTU rescue team to arrive. Paul takes a bullet for Jack, telling him that he owed him for saving his life.
Jack brings Paul back to CTU and he sees how upset Audrey is. When a name from the terrorist watch list is found on the encrypted document, Jack plots for Dina Araz to use that man to lead her to Marwan. Dina pretends that she has taken Jack hostage, but Marwan doesn’t believe her. When Dina can’t shoot Jack, Marwan kills her and takes Jack into custody.
Jack is brought back to Marwan’s hideout and is handcuffed. When a prisoner exchange for Behrooz is set up, Jack tells Marwan that CTU won’t give up the boy if he is significant. Jack manages to short out some phone lines so that they cause a disconnect in service. He is transported to a meeting place where he is traded for Behrooz. Marwan’s plan to kill Jack is foiled by CTU’s sniper, and Jack is rescued by the field agents. Jack lets Tony know that he manipulated the phone lines, and Tony is able to track the phone service to locate Marwan’s hideout.
Jack raids Marwan’s hideout, but the computer hard drives have been destroyed. Jack finds a batch of forged passports and one of them matches Anderson, a former military pilot. Jack goes to Anderson’s apartment where an FBI agent has been sent to investigate. He meets the woman who he thinks is the FBI agent, but it’s really one of Marwan’s associates looking for a hidden backup drive. Jack kills the woman, and finds schematics for a stealth bomber on the hard drive. CTU locates an airborne stealth that has been kidnapped, and Jack radios Anderson to try to convince him not to do what he is planning. Anderson ignores Jack’s pleas and fires at Air Force One. The President’s plane is hit by a missile.
Heller assigns Jack to lead the mission to recover the Nuclear Football. Jack speaks to a man who found the Football in the desert, and he instructs him on how to disarm the transponder that acts as a tracing device. Jack flies by chopper to where the man and his wife are hiding, but Marwan gets there first. Jack secures the latch code from Audrey, and he has the man and woman each take part of the Football and separate. Marwan captures the couple and escapes. Jack is able to save them from being killed, but when he finds the Football some of the pages with warhead codes are missing.
Jack discovers that the Playbook pages Marwan stole correspond to nuclear warheads that are in transit. When a rights lawyer gets a recently apprehended suspect released, Jack knows that Marwan is responsible. After the new President refuses to grant CTU jurisdiction to hold the suspect, Jack abruptly resigns in order to interrogate the man as a private citizen. By use of force,    Jack gets the man to reveal a location for where Marwan is supposed to be.
Despite Audrey’s disapproval, Jack knows he needed to torture the suspect in order to get crucial information quickly. Jack goes to the address that the suspect gave up and he confirms that Marwan is inside. Before he and the SWAT team can raid the building, the Secret Service arrives to arrest Jack on the President’s strict orders. Marwan’s men see the Secret Service and flee into a tunnel. Jack is unable to catch them because they were able to set off a bomb that seals the tunnel. Jack is detained and then released when President Logan realizes his pride has cost them Marwan. Knowing that Marwan is long gone, Jack returns to CTU.
Jack learns that a Chinese scientist named Lee helped Marwan with the nuclear warhead. Lee is protected at the Chinese Consulate, who cannot turn him over for questioning. Former President Palmer asks Jack to perform a covert operation to kidnap Lee, which makes Jack personally responsible in order to protect the U.S. government. Jack gets the man out, but Lee is shot in the raid. Jack rushes Lee back to CTU so that a doctor can remove the bullet and save Lee’s life. However, the doctor is already in the middle of an operation on Paul Raines. Audrey is horrified when Jack interrupts her husband’s surgery and forces the doctor to work on Lee. Paul dies, and Audrey blames Jack.
Jack learns that the Chinese Consul was killed in the ambush, and he has his team plant alibis for the night. Jack tells the head of security from the Consulate that neither he nor anyone at CTU was involved. When the man produces a still from the surveillance footage that incriminates one of the CTU agents, Jack insists that it is a forged photo. Jack quickly ushers that CTU agent out of the city on a chopper. Lee gets out of surgery and gives up a possible location for Marwan. Jack goes to that building with a team and raids the premises. He captures Marwan, but discovers that Marwan has already launched a missile with the nuclear warhead. Its destination is unknown.
Jack tries to persuade Marwan to give up more information, but he refuses to break. As the agents attempt to transport Marwan, terrorists fire on them and Marwan escapes. Jack returns to CTU to interrogate Richard Heller, whose number was found on Marwan’s cell. Jack argues with Audrey about torturing her brother, and Jack admits that he was afraid to tell her about his past at CTU. Jack takes Tony with him in the field, and Tony gets captured by Mandy.
Jack learns that Mandy contacted Michelle for help in escaping. He has Michelle pretend that she is cooperating, and Jack hides teams to catch Mandy. When the car explodes with what appears to be Mandy and Tony, Jack thinks something isn’t quite right. He plays back the audio from the call and realizes that Mandy was not outside in the rain but was calling from an apartment. Jack finds a trail of blood that leads him to where Mandy has taken Tony. He apprehends Mandy and saves Tony. With no time to interrogate, Jack immediately offers Mandy a Presidential pardon in return for Marwan’s whereabouts. She agrees to look at the deal.
After Mandy gets her pardon, she tells Jack where Marwan is. Jack goes there and prevents Marwan from leaving. Marwan jumps over the side of the building and Jack grabs his arm. While Jack demands to know the missile’s location, Marwan slices Jack’s hand with a knife. This causes Marwan to fall to his death. Marwan’s damaged digital device is found, and Chloe is able to determine that the missile is headed to Los Angeles. The Air Force shoots the missile down, preventing a nuclear blast. Jack returns to CTU and Audrey breaks up with him. China gets proof that Jack led the raid on the Consulate and they want to convict him. Jack agrees to be turned over until Palmer warns him that a covert White House mission intends to kill Jack to prevent him from exposing national secrets. An agent is sent to kill him, but Jack fakes his own death during a gunfight by using a drug to suppress his cardiac level. Tony and Michelle revive Jack and sneak him out of CTU. They arm him with a phony identity and an untraceable cell. Jack speaks to Palmer, who says that he is now officially considered dead. Jack slips away to lead his life in hiding.

Actor: Dennis Haysbert

Character: David Palmer

Summary: Former President David Palmer is called at home by his ex-aide Mike Novick, who now works for the recently sworn-in President Logan. Although Palmer has been given intelligence briefings on the day’s events, Novick brings him up to speed on the missing nuclear warhead. Novick says that Logan is unsure of his own decision-making, and he wants Palmer to help
him get through this disaster. Palmer wants to speak to the President himself, and he agrees to come to the White House.
Palmer goes to the White House, where President Logan asks him to assume the task of finding the nuclear warhead. Palmer jumps into action. After the Chinese Consular cannot turn over a suspect hiding in the Consulate building, Palmer asks Jack to conduct a covert mission to bring the man in for questioning. When the Consular is accidentally killed in the raid, Palmer is concerned that the ramifications from China will be severe if they find out that the American government was involved.
To hide the United States’ involvement, Palmer and Novick leak that an anti-Chinese group was responsible for the raid on the Consulate. When President Logan is furious with Palmer for allowing such a covert mission on a fragile ally, Palmer is defiant that what he sanctioned was the only solution at the time. Logan then accuses Novick and Palmer of working together to take control of the country from him, but Logan backs down and acquiesces to Palmer’s decisions.
The Speaker of the House questions whether Palmer is in control instead of President Logan. By rules of succession, he should be the next in line. Palmer concocts a scheme to show the Congressman that he has dismissed himself in order to allow Logan to take the driver’s seat. Yet Palmer really runs the operation behind the scenes.
Palmer assures Logan that CTU will take care of the agent that was photographed at the Chinese Consulate. With no solutions to stop the missile emerge, Palmer prepares for the worst. President Logan is afraid of being the target, and he blames Palmer for causing the nuclear missile to go off. Palmer can’t believe Logan’s ingratitude.
Even though the woman who knows Marwan’s location is the same person who tried to kill Palmer two years ago by putting a virus on his hand, Palmer urges the President to sign her pardon. When Jack loses Marwan, President Logan blames Palmer. After the nuclear threat is diverted, Palmer lets Jack know that China demands to take him into custody for the raid on their Consulate. Palmer learns of a secret White House operation to kill Jack and prevent him from spilling secrets to the Chinese. He tries to get Logan to stop it, but Logan ignores his plea. Palmer warns Jack, which allows him to fake his own death and escape. Palmer speaks to Jack one last time, thanking him for his service to the country. Jack is officially considered deceased.

Actor: Carlos Bernard

Character: Tony Almeida

Summary: After Jack calls him for help, Tony saves Jack and Audrey from being killed by the terrorists.
Tony, who was dumped by Michelle and has been out of work since he was released from prison, allows Jack to use his home computer to track the surveillance footage. Although he doesn’t want to get involved with any more CTU business, Tony agrees to accompany Jack to pick up the suspect.
After Jack urges him to help on the case, Tony accompanies him to the hotel where Dina Araz is hiding out. The CTU agent in charge does not want to take orders from Tony.
Tony accompanies Jack to the terrorists’ hideout and they uncover clues about the day’s events. Jack asks Tony to take Dina and Behrooz back to CTU, but Tony is wary of returning there. Jack says that this will help him get reinstated. When Tony arrives at CTU, Driscoll hands him a badge and security clearance.
Despite the pardon, Tony threatens to send Behrooz to prison if Dina doesn’t tell him information about Marwan. She gives up that Marwan was her cell’s contact and that he has the Override device at the Rockland Building.
After Driscoll leaves, Tony convinces Heller to put him in charge of CTU because he knows the operation. Curtis is opposed to Tony’s new role, but Tony assures him that he it is only temporary. Tony is shocked to see the new CTU director arrive from District. It is his ex-wife Michelle.
Tony argues with Michelle about his sudden demotion. Knowing Jack’s field technique, Tony suggests that they send the backup in. Michelle disagrees, and she is proved wrong. Tony offers to leave, but Michelle asks him to stay. She gives him more responsibility.
Tony thinks that Edgar has lost focus, and Michelle brings back Chloe to pick up the slack. Tony tries to convince Jack to talk to Audrey before he goes undercover, but Jack refuses to burden her any further.
Tony keeps Audrey apprised of Jack’s situation. He also oversees the interrogation of Behrooz, advising Curtis to use physical torture. With Jack’s information about the shorted phone lines, Tony is able to pinpoint the location of Marwan’s hideout. He sends the address to both Jack and the CTU tactical teams.
Tony sees Buchanan be tender to Michelle, and he questions his ex-wife on whether she is sleeping with the boss. Tony and Michelle try to convince the President to remain in the air, but Keeler refuses and heads for Los Angeles. Tony helps Jack communicate with the pilot manning the stealth bomber, but Jack’s attempt to prevent the attack on Air Force One is unsuccessful.
Tony is curt with Buchanan, but Buchanan says that he and Michelle didn’t last as a couple because she was still hung up on Tony. When Jack recovers the Nuclear Football, Tony wonders why Marwan would give it up in order to escape. They realize that Marwan ripped critical pages out of the code book that correspond to warhead activations.
Tony apologizes to Michelle about his earlier comments on her relationship with Buchanan. He wants to put it all behind them so they can get on with the task at hand. After a call to brief the newly-sworn in President, Tony voices his concern that Logan is not up to the job.
Tony intercedes when Edgar’s recalcitrance to Chloe affects her job. After Chloe finds a woman whose boyfriend has files that relate to the missing warhead, Tony rightly suspects that the man is in Iowa where the convoy disappeared.
Michelle picks up Tony’s line and takes a call from Jen. Tony apologizes to Michelle and explains that he’s not in love with Jen. When Jack takes on a non-official raid of a foreign-governed building, he only entrusts Tony to monitor his mission. Buchanan finds out later and gives Tony flack. Tony questions whether Buchanan is only angry because of Michelle.
Tony tells Michelle that he doesn’t like being without her. She has the same feelings. When Jack discovers a live feed of a missile Marwan launched with the nuclear warhead, Tony and the team are unable to pinpoint its location in the few seconds they are given.
Tony tells Michelle that, in order for their relationship to work, they must both leave CTU for good. He joins Jack in the field, but Tony is captured by Mandy. She ties him up and gags him.
Mandy has a decoy go outside to see if the CTU agents will apprehend her, and a man dressed like Tony enters the car that explodes. Mandy takes Tony by gunpoint to the garage. He cuts his foot with glass and leaves a trail of blood for Jack to follow. Tony puts up a fight until Jack arrives and saves him. Tony calls Michelle to let her know that he is still alive. He tells her that he loves her and is coming back to CTU to see her.
Tony returns to CTU and embraces Michelle. She says that she never realized how much she loved him until she feared he was dead. After Jack finds out that he will be killed instead of handed over to the Chinese government, Tony helps him fake his own death to trick the agent sent to murder him. Tony injects Jack with the drug to increase his heartbeat and revive him. Then he and Michelle sneak Jack out and arm him with a fake identity and an untraceable cell. Jack thanks them both.

Actor: Reiko Aylesworth

Character: Michelle Dessler

Summary: Michelle arrives at CTU to replace Driscoll as director.
Michelle fires Sarah for being untrustworthy and demotes Tony to a low-level analyst job because of his past drinking. Audrey lets Michelle know that Tony saved her and Jack’s life today and that he still cares for Michelle. When Tony’s judgment proves more valuable, she agrees to give him a bigger job.
With Edgar faltering, Michelle gets Chloe to come back to CTU. Chloe’s return helps CTU work more efficiently, but they still lose track of Jack when Marwan takes him hostage.
Marwan tells Michelle that he will trade Jack for Behrooz, but CTU doesn’t know why Behrooz is significant. A superior from Division is brought in to oversee the operation.
Buchanan yells at Michelle for allowing Marwan to escape. He later apologizes, and Tony notices the intimacy between the two. Tony confronts Michelle about her relationship with Buchanan, and she refuses to say whether she is still sleeping with him.
Michelle directs the CTU staff to make finding Marwan the top priority, but Jack is pulled away to recover the Nuclear Football. They are all relieved when the President survives the crash.
Michelle receives an apology from Tony for how he reacted to the news of her relationship with Buchanan. She assures Buchanan that Tony won’t be distracted by the dynamics between them. With the pressure to find the stolen nuclear warhead, Michelle has Curtis interrogate the suspect apprehended. Yet they are stopped by a rights lawyer, who has a signed order for the man’s release.
Michelle leads the tactical team that will raid Marwan’s hideout. After Marwan escapes, Michelle has the video tape found on one of the men sent back to CTU for analysis.
Based on Marwan’s video, Michelle and Buchanan assume that the terrorists plan to launch a nuclear bomb on America by dawn. Michelle picks up Tony’s phone and she is shocked to speak to his girlfriend, Jen. Tony says that he doesn’t love Jen.
Michelle receives a call from the Chinese Consulate requesting that an official be let into CTU for an investigation, and she is forced to allow it. Tony tenderly tells her that he misses her, and Michelle says that she never wanted them to end up apart.
Michelle agrees when Tony asks her to quit CTU to sustain their relationship. They kiss for the first time since his return. When Tony is captured in the field, Michelle is fearful for his life.
Michelle begins to freak out about saving Tony, but finally settles down. She gets a call from Mandy who is holding Tony hostage with a set of demands to save him. Doing opposite of what caused Tony to be sent to prison, Michelle immediately tells Buchanan and Jack. They try to thwart Mandy, who has set it up to make it look like she blew herself up with Tony. Michelle is distraught by Tony’s death, and Buchanan sends her home. Yet Jack figures out that Mandy used decoys in the explosion. When Tony is saved, he calls Michelle and tells her that he loves her. He promises to come back to CTU to see her.
Michelle kisses Tony when he returns. She feels ashamed for not putting his life before the mission, just as he did for her a few years ago. Tony assuages her guilt and puts it behind them. When Jack is the target of a covert mission, Michelle helps Tony fake Jack’s death. She and Tony drive Jack off the CTU grounds. They give Jack the resources to hide out with a new identity. Both Michelle and Tony find it hard to say goodbye to him.

Actor: Kim Raver

Character: Audrey Heller Raines

Summary: Audrey begs Jack not to tell her father about their secret relationship. She accompanies Heller to her brother’s house. Jack gets news that Heller is the real target for the terrorists, but it is too late -- Audrey and Heller are kidnapped.
Audrey and her father are taken to a warehouse compound. Audrey is panicked, but Heller assures her that they will be rescued. The terrorists decide against killing her right away in case she becomes useful.
Heller tells Audrey to try to escape once his trial begins. She is afraid to leave her father.
Audrey notices that her father is having trouble breathing, and she asks one of the guards to get him his heart medication. Heller fakes a heart attack to knock out the guard. Audrey punches the guy with a hammer. She and Heller try to escape, but are caught by Omar.
Audrey convinces her father that his signing the confession papers was not traitorous to his country. She refuses to take his life, and instead decides to end both of their lives together. As they slowly inhale toxic fumes from a gas leak, Omar removes them from the cell to save them. Audrey recognizes one of the terrorists.
After Jack saves her, Audrey tries to identify the man she recognized in the compound. She remembers that she met him at a political function. Audrey’s husband Paul comes to Los Angeles to get back together, but she tells him that she is in love with someone else. Heller figures out that Audrey and Jack are a couple.
Paul attempts to make amends with Audrey, but she asks for a divorce. Audrey goes with Jack to ID the man from the compound who she had met at a party. When they are attacked by terrorists at the security company, Audrey is forced to take a weapon and fire back. Tony Almeida saves Jack and Audrey’s lives.
Audrey is shaken after another attempt on her life, and she rests at Tony’s house. After Jack goes to find the suspect, Audrey is brought back to CTU by the Secret Service and is reunited with her father.
With CTU low on manpower, Audrey intervenes to coordinate the police effort. She makes an attempt to help Edgar rescue his mother but is unsuccessful. Audrey gets word that the radiation cloud emitted from the reactor is headed for the area over where citizens are trapped in a clogged evacuation route.
Jack tells Audrey that her husband Paul is connected to the terrorists. She calls Paul and pretends that she wants to talk about reconciliation. Audrey goes alone to Paul’s hotel and tries to stall until Jack can meet her there. Paul is suspicious of her motives and he becomes violent. Jack arrives just in time to apprehend Paul.
Audrey is horrified when Jack uses shock treatment to get Paul to talk. She doesn’t believe that Paul was aligned with the terrorists. When Paul apologizes for putting her in harm’s way, she reaches out to him. Jack notices the warmth between them.
Audrey returns to CTU as Paul accompanies Jack to the company with the Override device because Paul knows their computer system. She asks Jack to take care of her husband.
After seeing Jack in the field, Audrey questions her feelings for him. She tells Tony that she is sure Jack will want to return to his desk job, but Tony isn’t convinced.
Audrey is upset about Paul’s dire condition, and she confesses to her father that she didn’t realize how much she cared for him until he was harmed.
As Audrey waits for Paul to be released from surgery, Tony lets her know about Jack’s status. She vehemently demands that Michelle bring Jack back alive.
Jack tells Audrey that they need to talk about what has happened today, and he promises to call back. After Paul comes out of surgery paralyzed, Audrey is emotional when she says that what he did for Jack was brave.
Audrey informs Jack that Heller wants him to focus on recovering the Nuclear Football. When Audrey seems distracted, Jack tells her to focus on the work instead of worrying about Paul. She says she can’t separate herself like he does. Jack later apologizes for sounding like he doesn’t care.
Audrey tearfully tells Jack that Paul’s condition is not stable. When Jack returns to CTU, she tries to speak to him. Yet Jack leaves in a hurry without divulging to Audrey what he is doing.

When Audrey finds out that Jack went against the President’s orders and tortured the suspect, she lashes out at him. Jack has no time to argue, so Audrey confronts Buchanan. He says that she doesn’t know what it’s like in the field.
Audrey gets approval for Paul to be moved to a special hospital and she is going with him. However, she doesn’t tell Jack about her plans. When Paul has trouble breathing, the doctor performs an emergency surgery to fix his heart. Jack forces the doctor to stop the operation in order to save a suspect in the terrorist plot. Paul dies, and Audrey accuses Jack of killing her husband. She screams at Jack that she hates him.
When Jack tries to console Audrey, she wants nothing to do with him. CTU falsifies the hourly reports to make it appear that Jack had been working with Audrey during the time of the raid on the Consul. Although she is angry that she is being forced to lie, Audrey does not tell the Chinese official anything to implicate Jack or the U.S. government.
Jack permits Audrey to speak to her brother before he starts the interrogation. Heller returns, and is able to get Richard to admit that he was seduced by a man whose partner may have used his phone to call Marwan. Jack says that he was reluctant to tell Audrey about what he’s done for CTU in fear that she wouldn’t love him anymore. Audrey is exhausted and doesn’t want to talk. Jack promises to hash it all out later.
Audrey searches the satellite for the missile, but comes up empty-handed. Palmer asks her to compile disaster scenarios for all the possibly threatened cities.
As Audrey prepares to transport Paul’s body, she speaks with Jack one last time. Although Jack professes his love to her, Audrey cannot live with his CTU lifestyle because this is where he belongs. She ends their relationship, kissing him goodbye. When Audrey finds out that Jack has died, she breaks down in tears.

She refuses to give any answers until Jack says that he can grant clemency for Behrooz and protect him from Navi. Fearing for her son’s life, Dina leads the agents to the hospital where Behrooz went. She is horrified when she sees Navi escape with Behrooz at gunpoint. Knowing that it is too late to save her son, Dina tells Jack that she is glad the plan is moving forward to cause a nuclear meltdown.
Jack has Dina phone her husband so that they can distract him. After Behrooz kills Navi, Dina is relieved that her son is alive. The only information that she can give to Jack is an address where most of their operations took place. Dina and Behrooz are taken back to CTU for questioning.
At first, Dina doesn’t give up any important information to Tony. He then threatens to send Behrooz to prison where he will be so tortured that he will want to kill himself. Dina finally relents, and tells Tony that Marwan is the cell leader who has the Override device.
Jack convinces Dina that he will allow her to be with her son if she cooperates with an undercover operation to find Marwan. Dina assures Behrooz that she is only doing this to let them reunite, but Behrooz is still afraid for her. When Marwan asks her to prove her loyalty by shooting Jack, Dina instead turns the gun on Marwan. The chamber is empty. Marwan has her killed.

Actor: Jonathan Ahdout

Character: Behrooz Araz

Summary: Behrooz is angry that his father, Navi, has been listening to his phone calls and reading his emails to see if he is still dating his American girlfriend. His role in the mission is to deliver a briefcase from the train explosion.
After his girlfriend Debbie follows him to the compound, Behrooz must tell her that his parents don’t want him seeing her because she isn’t Muslim. He promises to meet her later. When Behrooz returns home, his father slaps him for what happened. Navi orders him to summon Debbie to the house.
Behrooz asks his mother for help in convincing Navi not to kill Debbie. He is pleased when Dina assures him that he doesn’t have to bring Debbie over. Yet Behrooz is horrified when Dina summons Debbie herself.
Behrooz is wary of his mother’s kindness to Debbie. Yet Dina hands him a gun, saying that both she and her husband feel he has to be the one to kill his girlfriend. Behrooz can’t do it, and he warns Debbie to leave. Yet Debbie falls down, drugged by Dina’s tea. Behrooz weeps over her death.
Behrooz goes along with Dina’s plan to convince Navi that he was the one who killed Debbie. When Debbie’s mother shows up looking for her daughter, Behrooz says that he hasn’t seen her.
Behrooz is sent to bury Debbie’s body with one of the henchmen, but he realizes that he is the one who will be killed. Behrooz learns that his father put the hit out on him, so he murders the henchman instead.
Behrooz calls Dina and tells her that he killed Tariq. He asks her to come get him. When Dina arrives, she tells him that Navi has followed them. Navi’s men fire and hit Dina. Behrooz jumps in her car and they manage to escape.
Behrooz convinces his mother that she needs to get medical attention on her gunshot wound. Although Dina wants him to save himself, he insists that they stay together. At the hospital, a doctor notifies the authorities when he sees the ailment. Dina and Behrooz flee before the police can question them.
With his mother’s condition worsening, Behrooz goes to a nearby hospital where his uncle works to get some medicine. Navi has the uncle stall Behrooz under the pretense that he is a drug-user. Dina calls Behrooz and says that she has been captured by the police. She has made a deal to ensure he won’t be sent to prison and has arranged for the authorities to pick him up. Behrooz learns that Navi is coming there too, and he tries to flee. Navi captures Behrooz and kills the uncle. With Behrooz as hostage, Navi avoids Jack’s gunfire to escape into the hospital garage basement.
Navi hides Behrooz in the hospital laundry room. Jack raids the room and when he is about to apprehend Navi, Behrooz shoots his father in the back. Behrooz is reunited with Dina and they are taken back to CTU.
Dina is brought to Behrooz’s holding cell, and she tells him that she will help CTU find Marwan in order for them to be together. Behrooz knows this is dangerous, and he begs his mother not to do it.
Behrooz undergoes torture, but still maintains that he doesn’t know anything about Marwan. Curtis takes him from CTU in order to make a trade for Jack. He tells Behrooz that Dina is aware of this. Behrooz is terrified, knowing that Marwan will kill him. When Behrooz is handed over, the terrorists remove the tracking device that CTU planted in his head. They also tell him that his mother is dead. Behrooz doesn’t believe it.

Actress: Alberta Watson

Character: Erin Driscoll

Summary: Erin is the new Director of CTU. She fired Jack because of his drug addiction and generally cleaned up CTU. Cutting short a budget meeting with Jack, Driscoll watches a feed of a raid. Jack gives her advice on how to nab the guy, and Driscoll is annoyed by his interference even when it proves successful. She watches in horror as Jack shoots the captured suspect. Yet Jack gets the guy to admit that Heller is the real target.
Driscoll has Jack apprehended for torturing a suspect. After he threatens her credibility, she allows him to assist her field ops in chasing a lead on Heller.
Driscoll is frustrated when her staff can’t locate Jack or the terrorists. She orders Curtis to use torture on Richard Heller to get information, but Curtis refuses. Driscoll brings in a consultant, Marianne, who makes Curtis uncomfortable because they once had an affair.
Driscoll’s neighbor calls the police with a complaint about Driscoll’s schizophrenic teenage daughter, Maya. Driscoll has Sarah illegally send an agent in place of the LAPD to pick up the girl. Driscoll confirms her suspicions that Chloe has been helping Jack, and she has her arrested. Driscoll wants to apprehend Kalil despite Jack’s wishes not to. Yet they have Kalil’s call traced and she realizes that he is going to where Heller is being held.
Driscoll’s daughter Maya is safely brought to the CTU clinic. With Jack’s information proving credible, Driscoll allows him to take the lead in the field. Yet when the White House orders a strike on the compound before the trial can convict Heller, Driscoll warns Jack to abandon the raid. He disobeys her warnings and goes in alone.
Driscoll makes every attempt to protect Jack from the missile attack. Heller commends Driscoll for her judgment calls that resulted in his being saved. Yet she knows that Jack was the one who was right all along.
Driscoll notices that her daughter was given the wrong medication, and she panics when Maya can’t be revived. Driscoll is summoned back to work, where the CTU techs have narrowed the at-risk nuclear reactors down to six.
After Heller’s trap names Sarah as the mole in CTU, Driscoll interrogates her but finds nothing. Driscoll believes that Sarah doesn’t match the profile. Edgar reveals to Driscoll that it was Marianne who was using Sarah’s computer to send transmissions.
Driscoll and Curtis agree to cover themselves if questioned about Marianne’s CTU breach. When Edgar’s mother is trapped in the evacuation, Driscoll must convince him to remain at work.
Driscoll reinstates Tony at CTU. She asks Sarah, who has just recovered from being tortured, to spy on Tony. Sarah knows that Driscoll feels her power is threatened by Jack and Tony, and Sarah agrees to help if Driscoll gives her a promotion. Driscoll agrees.
Amidst trying to lead her team in nabbing the Override device, Driscoll is sidetracked when her daughter Maya becomes violent in the clinic. Driscoll is not able to calm her down, and Maya is angry that her mother won’t take her home. When Maya commits suicide, Driscoll is distraught.
After Maya’s body is taken from CTU, Driscoll becomes distracted and falls faint in a meeting. At Heller’s urging, she agrees to take time off. She passes her command to Tony.

Actor: Mary Lynn Rajskub

Character: Chloe O'Brian

Summary: Chloe is still an analyst at CTU. Chloe is proven correct when she figures out that the bombing of the train is not the same as a rumored threat an hour later. She is even more sure when her programmer friend finds a code that could bring down the entire internet. Although Driscoll refuses to take Chloe’s conclusions seriously, Jack does. Chloe helps him discover the terrorists’ real intentions.
Chloe sneaks into Jack’s holding room to tell him about her friend’s findings on the web. They call Andrew and assure him that Jack will pick him up. Driscoll questions Chloe’s loyalty and she admits that she trusts Jack more.
Chloe secretly accesses the CTU satellite to help Jack track the suspect. She is horrified when she sees her friend Andrew tortured and about to be slain. She breaks down in tears.
Knowing that Driscoll is on to her, Chloe asks Edgar to help her track the satellite for Jack because her system is being monitored. She gets the satellite up for Jack just as she is caught by Driscoll, who has her arrested.
Driscoll allows Chloe the chance to save face and avoid jail by signing her own resignation. Chloe takes the offer. As she is walking out, Chloe assures Edgar that she didn’t name him as an accomplice.
Chloe is called back to CTU by Michelle in order to help Jack. Chloe agrees, and immediately takes charge when she returns. Chloe arranges the satellite feed to monitor Jack and she is able to keep Edgar in check.
Chloe finds out that she now has to report to Edgar and is annoyed by this. She tells Edgar to prioritize his new responsibilities, and the overworked Edgar ignores an important piece of evidence about the terrorist plot.
After Edgar screws up a task because he is upset about his mother, Chloe takes the rap for him. She does this even though telling the truth would have given her back her old job.
Chloe breaks the news that Air Force One has crashed.
After Edgar gets worked up about the suspect being released, Chloe urges him to get back to his job.
Edgar gives Chloe attitude, but she is vindicated when she takes a call from a woman whose boyfriend has suspicious files on his laptop. Chloe verifies that the information is a diagram of the trigger on the missing nuclear warhead. Buchanan orders Chloe to go to the woman’s house to decrypt the other files, and Chloe is nervous about being in the field. Her fears are warranted when one of Marwan’s men raids the house and shoots the accompanying agents. Chloe and the woman escape, and Chloe uses a CTU weapon to kill the gunman.
Chloe is strangely unfazed by the fact that she just killed a man, and she continues to work on decrypting the laptop. She returns to CTU and admits to Edgar that she doesn’t know why it has not affected her.
In a moment of attempted normalcy, Chloe offers to be a sounding board for Jack’s troubles. Unfortunately, Chloe picks the worst time to try to be friendly. When the Chinese official tricks Edgar into giving up information that would incriminate CTU, Chloe pulls Edgar away and calls him an idiot.
When Marwan escapes, Chloe loses him on the satellite. Yet she is able to track down the location where a cab drove the suspects from Richard’s house.
Chloe and Buchanan trade looks when Michelle loses her cool about Tony’s capture.
With Edgar’s help, Chloe is able to decipher what was left on Marwan’s PDA as a flight plan for the missile. They get the information to the Air Force in time to intercept the missile. When Jack fakes his own death, Chloe is one of the few people at CTU who are in the loop. She arranges to intercept the coroner to switch the bodies.

Actor: William Devane

Character: Secretary of Defense James Heller

Summary: Heller dispatches Jack to CTU to find out more about the train bomb, but he won’t grant Jack authority over the investigation. Heller visits his son Richard to try to convince him not to protest against the President. While at Richard’s, Heller and daughter Audrey are abducted.
Heller tries to comfort his daughter when they are imprisoned. The terrorists strip him of his suit and parade him on a web-streamed video. He is tied up in front of masked men who threaten to submit him to a trial for war crimes where the sentence is death.
Heller is upset that his daughter is being subjected to this torture when it was only meant for him. He refuses to sign the terrorists list of offenses until they threaten Audrey.
When Audrey inquires about his heart medicine Heller gets an idea to fake a heart attack. The guard comes into the cell, and Heller takes him down and grabs his gun. He and Audrey make their way of the compound, and he kills a few guards. Omar captures them and threatens to kill Audrey if any more of his men are dead.
Embarrassed by signing the confession statement, Heller wants Audrey to kill him so that the terrorists’ plan is foiled. She would rather end both their lives. They break open a gas pipe, but Omar revives them before they die. Heller is brought to the video broadcast for the start of his trial.
Just as Heller is to be executed, Jack rescues him. Heller and Jack shoot down the other guards and are saved by the Marines. Heller realizes that Audrey and Jack are together. He reunites with his son, but then allows CTU to continue subjecting Richard to sensory disorientation. Heller suspects that Richard is still hiding something.
Heller advises Paul to let Audrey make up her own mind about their marriage. Heller sees Richard, who is furious at his father for allowing CTU to torture him. CTU manages to regain control of some of the nuclear reactors, but six are still at risk. Heller must alert the President.
After learning there is a mole within CTU, Heller has his assistant plant phony information on Jack’s location to see who transmits it. Their lead points to Sarah, but Driscoll gets nothing when she interrogates her.
Heller reports to the President that one of the reactors is already in meltdown. He is alarmed when Audrey gives him the news that the radiation cloud emitted from the reactor is blowing towards the clogged evacuation route.
Heller allows Audrey to go to the local Defense Department office to help out. He learns that his son-in-law Paul has connections to the terrorists. Heller is furious when he finds out that Audrey went by herself to meet up with Paul.
Heller is wary of Audrey’s safety at the building where Jack has located the terrorists. After Edgar is able to thwart the meltdowns on the nuclear reactors, Heller congratulates Driscoll and her staff.
Heller encourages Driscoll to take leave from her position. He appoints Tony as interim director and asks District to send a permanent replacement.
Audrey tells her father that her feelings for Jack might have changed since she saw him in the field.
With the potential for more attacks looming, the President orders Heller to work with a general to lay out options for martial law. Heller leaves CTU for this secretive meeting.
Heller returns to CTU when his son is connected to Marwan. He gets Richard to confess that he had an affair with a man whose female partner may have used his cell phone to call Marwan. This is how the terrorists found out about Heller’s unscheduled visit. Although Richard thinks his father is ashamed of his lifestyle, Heller is more disappointed that he didn’t come clean in the first place to stop the terrorist threat.
